THE MUSIC
First and foremost a songwriter, Scott's all-instrumental compositions meld a visceral mix of rock, pagan folk, metal influences and neo-classical styles all performed on acoustic guitar and bass guitar. Fans of Loreena Mckennitt, Blackmore's Night, Jethro Tull and even Iron Maiden will connect with the new CD Brocade. As a teenager in the 80s, Helland played bass in punk and metal bands, released several critically acclaimed underground records, and toured in the US, Canada, and South America. (See history page for more details) In 1995 Scott embarked on a new journey as a solo performer.

His playfully diverse instrumentals are creative and unpredictable. Often having a medieval flavor or a movie soundtrack mystique, the emphasis is on melody and a strong lyrical feel. But Scott confesses; "I'm into the big majestic sound of metal and classical music and the intensity of punk." Combine that with Helland's knack for melody, and you get music that emotes and has a physicality to it that has become Scott's signature sound.

Live, Scott performs his songs on acoustic and bass guitar and accompanies himself with a sequencer of his own rhythms and percussion creating an eclectic, entertaining musical soundscape.

Helland has recorded 6 solo CDs. His most recent, Brocade, was released in July 2004. This CD is a collection of 14 instrumentals dominated by stark, layered acoustic and bass guitar melodies and rhythms, with percussion throughout and a guest violinist on one song. Brocade features a 9-minute video of in-studio footage and interviews along with a bonus remix version of the song "Fire, Bow and Brimstone." His 2002 release Earthbound is a tapestry of melodic upbeat instrumentals. This collection is reaching audiences by his many performances year round and by the airwaves on such acclaimed shows as Echoes and independent radio shows across the country and overseas.
